One of the most iconic songs of Scotland is Loch Lomond. To hear this sung in a stadium, pub, street.. doesn't matter where.. will tug at the heart strings of so many.
The roots of this song have back stories and speculation ranging from a story of a Jacobite who is knowing he has little time left (headed for the gallows) to two lovers who are saying goodbye. I'm nor historian or expert on this, so let the Internet be your guide on information. However, the lyrics are essential ones to know and are great when sung with a few spirited friends. Try memorizing the first few lines and you'll have it down like a pro!
Loch Lomond:
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me & my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o Loch Lomond.
***
O ye'll (you"ll) tak' (take) the high road an' I'll tak' the low,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o'Loch Lomond.
***
Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o Ben Lomond,
Wher'in soft purple hue, the highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloamin'
***
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o Loch Lomond.
***
The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.
***
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o Loch Lomond.
